Puppy Dog Erection

Yes, you read correctly, my innocent little puppy Gus got himself horribly randy last night.

It started off so ‘innocently’. Gus took Ludo’s ‘girlfriend’ muff pup onto the bed, started caressing her slowly on the soft bed (humping like mad)

He got a little excited over something and *boom* there it was! In no time at all he found himself with a raging red erection.

Honestly, both Ash and I went into a bit of shock. Both of us had seen ‘happy boy lipsti cks’ before, but not the full Monty popsicle! My goodness. We both were giggling with laughter as Gus looked down upon himself with a look of awe and confusion on his face. I would of taken a photo – but it might have shocked people too much.

Just so you know the difference – A dog’s “lipstick” hanging out isn’t necessarily an erection. If he were having a true erection, it would be larger….more engorged, I guess you’d say. Just seeing the red rocket isn’t the same as seeing an erection. He just can’t keep in it his sheath.

Now we’re both pretty open and mature people – but seeing something that huge hanging out of my little baby puppy was actually almost offensively grotesque. I think it was when he started licking it that it fell into the ‘grotesque disturbing’ category.

Ash just hoped it wouldn’t get stuck ‘out’ as I’ve heard can happen. He had it for a good 5 minutes before it subsided as quickly as it started.

But it certainly left an impact upon us all. And we thought Ludo was the ‘bigger’ boy!

I decided to do some research into this occurrence, so that all those following in my tracks will know what to do if they DO happen to get themselves ‘stuck’ out.

Here is what I’ve found out:

Apparently, I’m not the only one to be face with this situation. If you want to have a seriously laugh, I highly can recommend reading this thread http://fhotd64476.yuku.com/topic/20692#.TmbVX46uVFs

BEFOREHAND BEHAVIOUR-

“Mounting, thrusting (humping) and masturbation are normal behaviours (PHEW!) exhibited by most dogs. Dogs masturbate in various ways. They mount a

nd thrust against other animals, people and objects, such as wadded-up blankets, dog beds and toys. Sometimes, dogs just rub against people or objects (without mounting them), or they lick themselves.

Mounting is not uncommon in puppies, and it’s generally more of a dominant behaviour than a sexual one – especially if the puppy is less than 6 months old.”

OOPS, DA IT IS-

“The swelling of the bulbus glandis and a possible erection are normal and common occurrences in male puppies (I’d be worried if a female puppy got an erection… obviously). The bulbis glandis lies on either side of the penis sheath and swells with excitement. In a puppy about 3 months old it will be about the size of a small walnut. As the erection subsides the penis will return inside the sheath. No other care is normally needed.”

HOLY CRAP, WHAT SHOULD I DO????-

The below advice I luckily did NOT have to do, as the erection went down by itself. I sent the advice to Ashton so he would know what to do if it happened again, as he’s said ‘NOT IT!’… I said it could become the perfect family activity. He didn’t find my comment half as amusing as I did.

  • Do not use ice in such a situation.
  • Removing the stimulation should resolve the situation.
  • It’s an indication that they need more EXERCISE.
  • Apply plain KY jelly to keep the area moist (allow the penis to retract into the sheath)
  • Apply a sugar water solution. Take a lot of sugar and dissolve in water. Use a wash cloth to saturate the area every 5-10 mins for about an hour.
  • Give your boy a helping ‘hand”

If none of those works, keep the area moist with KY jelly until you can get him to a vet.

THANK Goodness we didn’t have to go through any of those options!

Great article! That is the type of information that are meant to be shared
across the web. Disgrace on Google for not positioning this put
up upper! Come on over and consult with my website .
    Thank you =)

Thanks for the approving comment. Google is only doing their job. I’ve not posted recently (or even close to recently) so they are pushing the ratings down.
Boys are 2 and a half now, with Gus still regularly ‘loving’ his muff pup. Although luckily we’ve not had a full blown E again!

Thank you for this information! I just found my 2 year old German shepherd (intact) with a raging erection. He looked a little distressed and uncomfortable. I talked to him a little bit and walked him around outside. It went back down fairly quickly. Should I be insulted? LOL! Aaanyway! Your information reassured me that this is normal. Especially considering your comment about needing more EXERCISE!!! He’s normally a VERY active dog but he’s recovering from surgery for GDV. I wanted to LIKE your post so I ended up registering with wordpress. Maybe I’ll be able to help some people the way you’ve helped me. 🙂

    • gusandludo says:

Thanks for you lovely comment Lisa!
I’m glad that my experience has been able to help you out. Best of luck with your blog. 🙂

  6. Heather White says:

Wow!!! I’ve been having this problem with our puppy too! First time scared the loving tar out me as his testicles were also in full blown sight. I also have a Husky who mounted my Rottweiler and they were engaged for a good while. I didn’t know what to do as my Husky is neutered. So I talked to my wonderful friend who’s name I won’t mention. She had told me that yes indeed my Husky only has what they call a glorified neutering an the muscles to mate were still there.
He can not get her preggers but he can still do the deed.
So when you get your male best friend to the vet ask for a full neutering not a glorified one ask them to remove the muscles so that he can not get his wank stuck in another bitches hoo hah.
I think it’s important for people to know about that as some may also be terrified as I an my kids were.
    Thanks
    Heather

Thanks for letting us know! I didn’t realise that when the de-sex dogs they don’t go the whole way. That does make a lot of sense now.

      • marilynne napala says:

        Thanks for the info.
I have a rescued dog- a year old. He came nuetered. Was confused, as the color of his penis was bright red and I didn’t know if something was wrong.

    • JD says:

Typically, neutering only removes the testes. I have not even heard of what you speak of and it makes little sense to me, to be honest; canines get stuck due to a part of their anatomy which is triggered by bloodflow- just like a human erection. That thing you mentioned ‘in full blown sight’ was probably the bulbus glandis, the feature of the penis made to hold the two dogs together during mating. To disable a dog’s ability to penetrate and tie would mean complete removal of the penis, bulbus glandis included, which is almost entirely unaccepted outside of severe health concerns.

  7. A photo of a puppy penis would not bother me at all. God who made them is in me.

  8. Jules says:

OMG! This just happened to my puppy and I didn’t know that it could get stuck. It seemed to be stressing him out until I took him outside to move around a bit. That worked to get things back where they belong. Whew! Thanks for posting about this.

  9. Be says:

Thank you for this post. So good to know this situation is normal. It certainly is scary the first time your little puppy pops out!

  10. Judy says:

Just found this post had the same shock when it happened to my 6mth puppy, now 7mth each
evening he humps his bed & the whole engorged lot sticks out for about 5 mins,he does look
guilty, confused.Tonight for the first time a tiny bit is still sticking out of his sheaf!.
Had decided not to have him neutered maybe I should. Will this behaviour continue as he
    gets older does anyone know?

  11. Wayne says:

Hi had my 1yr old bulldog /staff get an erection today and the poor dog looked terrified ,he couldn’t /wouldn’t move for about 10 minutes with his back arched,is this a normal reaction for a first time boner for a dog ?

  12. maura says:

My puppy is 4 months and it has been about 30 min sticking out yuck!! Will this go down by itself ?

    • gusandludo says:

Hi Maura, hopefully it’s gone down by now. But yes, for Gus at least it went down by itself.

      • Barb says:

Thank you so much…I have a 10 lb Havanese and I was horrified when this happened to him. The poor guy, his back was arched for 10 mins with this huge red/purple erection that looked like it weighed 2 lbs. He was looking at me with his sad little eyes as if to say…”FIX THIS” but all I could do was reassure him and comfort him – until things went back in place. Thank you so much for posting this. I thought I was alone and it is an embarrassing subject to try and find an answer to. You have to be very careful on the internet when researching to make sure you are not taken into some very dark areas. Your posting – gave me information, reassurance that I was not alone and even a little giggle here and there. Took the PANIC out of the situation and YES it does still happen from time to time but at least now…I am much calmer, now that I understand what I can do about it.

  13. julia says:

seriously? give him a “helping hand”? bleh, i hope that means something else

  14. What do you do if it doesn’t go back in!? This happened tonight to my 2 year old neutered Labradoodle and freaked me out completely. He was standing on the sofa in an arched position having humped the cushion and he looked terrified. I lifted him down and he just stood there with this bright red thing hanging out of him with what looked like a pair of balls on at the base of it – although I thought a neutered dog wouldn’t have them?

    • gusandludo says:

Sorry for the late reply Sharon, I’ve been on holidays. What happened to your poor little Labradoodle? Did it go down by itself or what solution did you find? (Suggestions always help for others going through the same thing)

    • RMC says:

This same thing just happened to my chihuahua, who is 10 months old and neutered .. I couldn’t believe it .. The whole episode lasted at least 10 minutes .. He was so helpless looking … I picked him up and put him next to me on the couch and started to rub his back very calmly and gently.. Then I gave him a tiny piece of meat , to distract him from what was happening to him , and boom it started to subside and it was gone …
What ever they like to hump you must now take it away … Lots of exercise and patience. Plus I have two females who are fixed but that don’t seem to matter..
The males will do this behavior wether they are alone or with other dogs ..
But needless to say I will be doing lots of research on this subject and finding solutions..
I was extremely shocked and afraid for my puppy …

  15. Jessica says:

This JUST happened to me. I wanted to die. My pup is 3 months old. I called the vet because it didn’t go down after about 5 minutes, and when she said I had to help by wetting my hand with warm water, I prayed that it would go down. Two seconds later, Charlie began licking himself and the little bugger went back in on it’s own. What a relief!

    • gusandludo says:

Oh Jess, You’ve brought me back the memories of my own panic. 🙂 So glad Charlie was able to sort it out on his own. Thanks for the comment. I’m sure your story will also help others in the same situation.

  16. Jayce says:

My puppy is 3 months old and his erection was sticking out about 3 or 4 inches and he was yelping it was very scary to see this and this article i am reading shows that this is pretty normal for a male puppy to do this. So thank you

  17. this is really helpful but i didn’t find find anyone else’s pup with erection below 3 months old..now this is scary for me..i have a boxer snd he’s 1 and half months…hes full of energy and gosh he runs with me every morning and evening…and still he has his erection..and by the look of it, he doesnt look guilty or uncomfortable rather he gives this look thats pretty…anyway..what should i do??

  18. Glenda says:

Oh joy I found a helpful article as last night my 5 month old Lhasa was humping a pillow and wowzer it was pretty apparent he got way too excited!! I freaked out and called my mother in law ( avid pet lover and owner) who informed me it should go away on its own as I thought it was “stuck” out. She advised me to take a cool rag and hold it on him for a few minutes and that did the trick! However I was pretty freaked out by the whole thing as this is my 1st male dog and I thought his balls for lack of a better word had also come out with his “lipstick” but they retracted as well with the cool compress. I wasn’t sure if this was normal so to speak this is when I googled and found your VERY helpful article!! Thank you from our WHOLE household!!

  19. Dave says:

Thanks for writing about this “sensitive” situation (honestly wasn’t sure what I’d get when I Googled “puppy erection”, lol). This just happened to my little pup, a 4 month old Rottweiler mix; he was humping away on his hump toy then tried walking away and started whining. I think he was more surprised about his red rocket wagging free than we were. He’s just a little guy, but IT sure isn’t! Poor little guy was all confused and worried about it, and it didn’t appear to be going back down after about 10 minutes. So… being the only other male in the household (besides two cats who weren’t volunteering for the job) it fell upon me to help my little buddy out with his little buddy. Sigh, the things we do for our pets. I decided to start with the least awkward or your helpful tips – a warm washcloth. Now that I was in a more subjective and helpful frame of mind I could actually take a good look at what was going on and noticed what I assume was the bulbis glandis stuck on the outside of the sheath, his skin and fur bunched underneath. I figured this was likely trapping the blood and keeping the erection fully erect, so using the washcloth I tried rubbing the fur behind it back “up and over” so to speak. And thankfully it popped back over! Whew! Applying the washcloth to his business after that returned it to the proper place. THANK YOU!

  20. Omg! Thank goodness I found this site. My 6month Shih tzu just had this experience humping on his plush bed. My 7yr. Old son is who brought it to my attention. He said “mommy look at Ziggy penis sticking out!” It looked like a little red lipstick. My Husband knew about that with experience with dogs growing up. It really grossed me out! I felt nausea. My son and Husband thought it was so funny. After about 5 minutes he licked and it went back inside. I was about to find a puppy hospital.

  21. Sherry says:

SO Glad I found this post!!! Happened to us last night with our 1 y/o Aussie. Lipstick my A$$! it was as big as an extra large tube of toothpaste!!! I’ve NEVER! he would spin like he was chasing his tail, then lay down and lick and get up, spin again, lay down and lick, spin again, last time he laid down facing us and BAM right in our face! I spit my drink out my nose!! It was so big and red, i thought it might be infected or something. I got up to see if i really saw what i just saw and he got up, i walked him around a little and it went down. I immediately went to Google…. watch your search terms when inquiring about a dog erection :\ . I’ve been worried all morning and finally came across this post…. i feel much better about the whole thing.

  22. tj says:

Holy crap… a helping hand? No!

  23. Matthew P. says:

I’m glad I found this online. My mom caught me giving our 2yr old retriever “a hand” while I was giving myself my other hand and I’ve been persecuted as some freak ever since. Just so the girl who acted dumb knows, yes, a hand, means a hand job, or masturbation. I just read this and thought, at last, I will show this to my parents in the morning and tell the to go to hell, because not only is there nothing wrong with it for me to be doing it to myself, but the dog needs it too, probably on the same daily schedule as I do, I’m fourteen and when I’m doing it to myself my dog jumps up on my bed and stares at my stuff and gets the erection from watching me. Maybe he’s a gay dog.
Either way, I also want to say to others that vets do this all the time.

  24. Ivey says:

We have a 9 month old Boston Terrier. Here lately he has his lip stick is out all of tha time. When I say out, I meen like 2-3 inches of wet pink grossness! And even tho his pennies is not totally out, it’s obviously swollen. About 10x it’s normal size. And it looks HUGE for such a small dog. What really gets to me, is when company comes over, or the kids play with him, he gets very happy and swells up and then out comes 2-3 inches of red rocket. The little kids don’t pay any attion and some times the red rocket might bump there hand. I’m like GROSE! And when company comes over, our dog greats them with a ref rocket. And of course the company don’t want a dog in there lap with a bonner. It just really grosses me out. And I hate the fact that the kids bump it by accident while playing with out dog. Any advice?
Fyi. He’s not fixed. But will be ASAP
    Will fixing him help?

  25. Anica says:

Giving my dog a piece of ice to eat and finding a cool spot for him to lie down on, works quickly.

my little puppy is going to be a year old he was laying on his blanket and when he got up there was a little blood then he had a big erection is that normal hes Chihuahua it is back down and no more blood

  29. Carole Livers says:

This happened to me yesterday and I freaked. I tried to get answers and really never came up with anything very useful until your site. Thank you, it’s so good to know others have dealt with this. Thank God. it did retract by itself, but the horror stories of how it can get stuck and do damage to the poor little guy is really scary. It is important to know what to do. Thanks again.

  30. Sarah says:

Hi I have a 6 month old American bully who is fully registered and will be a show dog. Today I caught him humping his bed for the first time since I’ve had him and had a full erection. I managed to get him to stop but noticed a thin stream of blood coming from his penis while being fully erected I was wondering if he is going to be ok as he just injured himself or if he should be seen he just turned 6 months old. Also he’s gone to the bathroom just fine and is sleeping now I’m just worried
